Diem-Thuy (Alina) Tran was born in Saigon, Vietnam. At only six months old, she was left in her mother’s and grandparents’ care in Vietnam while her father went to college in the USA. The separation of her father from her family was an unfortunate struggle but 8 years later, he managed to bring Alina and her mom to the U.S. The success of reuniting her family showed her how lucky she was to have an opportunity to a fuller life. Seeing her father’s emphasis on the importance of education has driven Alina at a young age to have the desire to help others achieve the same path. After graduating from the University of Washington, Alina developed a stronger sense of her passion in social and environmental causes, and has involved herself, as well as her children, in various volunteer work. She discovered VNSF while attending an appreciation dinner with her parents, and has been excited to be a part of such a genuine and hardworking team. Alina believes in VNSF’s mission to help the youth of Vietnam achieve an education, and open doors to opportunities for a better life.
